Iron I

Pottery types characteristic of this archeological period:

The archaeological period of the Iron Age is the time of the biblical judges Deborah, Gideon, and Samson. It was then that the Israelites participated in many severe skirmishes with the neighboring Canaanite tribes. The Book of Samuel gives the account of one such engagement between the Israelites and the Philistines. During this battle, the Ark of the Covenant was captured, and when the high priest Eli heard of this tragedy, he died. (Isa 4:18) Military tactics during this period became more sophisticated with the use of swift chariots and skilled archer’s fighting beside the military infantry. According to biblical accounts, infantry forces numbering up to 32,000 increased the deadliness of warfare. In Iron Age I, some pottery types maintained an appearance similar to the terra cotta vessels of the Late Bronze Age. However, vessels have been found decorated in the Mycanaean (ancient Greek) tradition with Philistine design in both mono- and bichrome styles.
