Iron IIa

Pottery types characteristic of this archeological period:

The Iron Age II began with a major Israelite victory over the Philistines in the battle of Rephaim (2SA5:22). Soon after, it was proclaimed that “all of Israel hearkens unto David.” The period that followed the united monarchy of King David and his son Solomon lasted for about eighty years. During this time, King David purchased the threshing floor in Jerusalem for six hundred shekels of gold. This was to be the future site of the Holy Temple. It was not until the reign of Solomon, however, that the Temple was built and the glory of Israel reached its Zenith. Tribal dissension due to taxation, along with the priests’ intolerance of the worship of numerous pagan idols, soon diminished loyalty to Solomon’s monarchy (I Kings 12). During this archaeological period, representative pottery types include Cypriot pilgrim flasks used like a canteen, large drinking chalices, and terra cotta decanters.
